Why we took up the cudgel for Mrs Jonathan – Reformed N-Delta Avengers

A group, Reformed Niger Delta Avengers, RNDA, has explained why it took up the case against former First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan, by EFCC, saying it was because the Commission was clearly running a campaign of calumny against her.
In a statement, yesterday, the group’s spokesperson, Cynthia Whyte, said: “Nigerians and the international community would recall that, recently, we had accused certain high-profile politicians from the Niger Delta region – including former President Goodluck Jonathan – as sponsors or patrons of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).
“The controversy generated by the revelation was yet to abate before the major militant groups in the region, including the NDA unanimously agreed to ceasefire and recognize the Chief (Dr) Edwin Clark-led pan-Niger Delta Peace and Dialogue Group as the sole body to represent the region in the forthcoming dialogue with the Federal Government.
“Following the development, all stakeholders from the region were expected to close ranks and work for the peace and development of the region. And naturally, we changed our earlier disposition towards the former President,” it said.
The group asserted: “It is an incontrovertible fact that, by virtue of his current status as the only Nigerian of South-south extraction to have assumed the position of President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR is automatically, the political leader of the entire Niger Delta region. He therefore deserves our respect.”
